Heavy-Duty Low Vibration Breaker Hammer for Concrete

Makita 70 lb. Advanced AVT Breaker Hammer – 1-1/8" Hex

The Makita HM1812 70 lb. Advanced AVT® Breaker Hammer is a heavy-duty corded demolition tool engineered for demanding concrete and masonry applications. Its 15-amp motor and improved hammer mechanism deliver 53.9 ft.-lbs. (72.8 J) of impact energy at 870 BPM, providing the force needed for breaking concrete, slabs, foundations, and other hard materials.

What sets the HM1812 apart is its Advanced AVT® three-component vibration-control system. The mechanical counterbalance, vibration-absorbing housing, and rubberized fixed handles work together to reduce vibration while maintaining strong impact performance. Makita rates vibration at just 6.5 m/s².

Key Features

  • 70 lb. breaker class for heavy-duty concrete demolition
  • 15-amp motor provides high-output corded performance
  • 53.9 ft.-lbs. / 72.8 J impact energy for demanding breaking applications
  • 870 BPM impact rate for efficient material removal
  • 1-1/8" hex tool holder accepts heavy-duty demolition bits
  • Advanced AVT® uses a synchronized three-component vibration-control system
  • Mechanical counterbalance helps direct more impact energy toward the work surface
  • Vibration-absorbing housing isolates vibration from the operator
  • Rubberized fixed handles provide additional vibration damping and control
  • Soft Start helps suppress start-up reaction
  • Soft No-Load function reduces motor speed when the hammer is not under load
  • Automatic brush cut-off helps protect the commutator and extend tool life
  • LED power and service indicators provide useful tool-status information
  • 16.4 ft. power cord provides extended reach around the jobsite
  • Integrated cord guide helps keep the power cord away from the immediate work area
  • Recessed lifting handles make handling the heavy tool more convenient

Advanced AVT® Vibration Control

The HM1812 uses Makita's Advanced AVT® system, which combines three vibration-reduction technologies.

The internal mechanical counterbalance moves against the forces generated by the hammer mechanism. A vibration-absorbing housing moves independently of the motor and hammer mechanism, while the fixed rubberized handles provide another layer of vibration isolation.

This design helps reduce vibration without sacrificing the tool's substantial impact performance. Makita specifies a vibration level of 6.5 m/s².

High-Impact Demolition Performance

The HM1812 is designed for jobs where significant impact force is required. Its 53.9 ft.-lbs. of impact energy makes it suitable for breaking and removing hard concrete and masonry.

Typical applications include:

  • Concrete slab removal
  • Floor demolition
  • Foundation work
  • Concrete breaking
  • Masonry demolition
  • Heavy-duty chipping
  • Trenching
  • Construction and renovation
  • Structural demolition

1-1/8" Hex Bit Compatibility

The 1-1/8-inch hex tool holder is designed for heavy-duty demolition accessories. The large hex connection provides a secure interface for transferring the hammer's impact energy into the workpiece.

Compatible accessories include:

  • Self-sharpening bull points
  • Flat chisels
  • Digging chisels
  • Other 1-1/8" hex demolition accessories

The HM1812 can also be paired with Makita's 1-1/8" hex dust-extraction attachment as part of an appropriate dust-management setup.

Soft Start and Soft No-Load Function

The Soft Start feature helps suppress the initial reaction when the tool is switched on, providing greater control when positioning the bit.

When the hammer is running without a load, the Soft No-Load function automatically reduces motor speed. Makita states that this feature helps increase tool life and performance.

Built for Long-Term Jobsite Use

The HM1812 includes several durability-focused features. Its automatic brush cut-off helps protect the commutator when the carbon brushes reach the end of their service life. An LED service light alerts the operator approximately eight hours before brush replacement is required.

The 16.4 ft. power cord and integrated cord guide also provide practical advantages when working across large concrete surfaces.

Ideal Applications

The Makita HM1812 is well suited for:

  • Professional concrete demolition
  • Concrete and masonry contractors
  • Foundation removal
  • Floor and slab breaking
  • Heavy-duty renovation
  • Trenching
  • Structural demolition
  • Concrete chipping and scaling
