Heavy Duty Drill Press for Precise Wood and Metal Drilling
NOVA Voyager DVR 18 In. Variable Speed Drill Press
The NOVA Voyager DVR 18 In. Variable Speed Drill Press is a floor-standing drill press designed for woodworkers, metalworkers, fabricators, and serious workshop users who need precise speed control and substantial drilling capacity. Instead of relying on traditional belts and pulleys, the Voyager uses DVR (Digital Variable Reluctance) direct-drive technology with intelligent electronic control.
Its computer-controlled system can adjust operating conditions according to the application, while the wide variable-speed range, digital controls, forward/reverse operation, tapping assistance, and electronic braking make the Voyager much more versatile than a conventional drill press.
The 18-inch swing, 6-inch spindle travel, large tilting table, and high-torque motor give this machine the capacity to handle a wide range of drilling tasks in wood, metal, plastics, and glass.

DVR Direct-Drive Technology
The defining feature of the NOVA Voyager is its DVR direct-drive motor. Unlike conventional drill presses that transfer power through belts and pulleys, the motor drives the spindle directly.
This eliminates belt-related vibration and the need to change pulley positions when adjusting speed. The electronic control system lets the operator select the desired speed directly, making it much faster to move between different materials and drilling operations.
Intelligent Speed Control
The Voyager provides continuously adjustable electronic speed control rather than a fixed set of pulley ratios. Its standard operating range is 50–3,000 RPM, with an optional setting that can increase the maximum speed to 5,500 RPM.
The machine's Adaptive Control system is designed to monitor operating conditions and adjust motor performance to maintain suitable operation under changing loads.
This broad speed range makes the machine suitable for applications that require slow, high-torque drilling as well as higher-speed operations.
High-Torque Motor
The Voyager is equipped with a DVR switched-reluctance motor. The U.S. 110/120V configuration is rated at 1.75 HP, while 220/230V versions are available with a 2 HP rating.
The direct-drive design delivers torque directly to the spindle without the power-transfer losses and mechanical complexity associated with conventional belt systems.
Large 18-Inch Swing
With an 18-inch swing, the Voyager provides approximately 9 inches of throat depth from the spindle centerline to the column.
This gives users more room to position larger workpieces underneath the spindle, making the machine useful for projects that would be difficult to handle on a smaller benchtop drill press.
6-Inch Spindle Travel
The spindle provides 6 inches of travel, giving the operator substantial drilling depth in a single setup. The quill is designed to reach its full travel in approximately two revolutions of the handle.
A digital depth display and adjustable mechanical stop also help make repeated drilling operations more consistent.
Large Adjustable Work Table
The Voyager features a 16-1/2 × 16-1/2-inch table, providing a generous working surface for positioning workpieces.
The table can:
Rotate 360°
Tilt from -45° to +45°
Be positioned at different heights relative to the spindle
Provide a maximum spindle-to-table distance of approximately 23-1/8 inches / 587mm in the current NOVA specification
The large table is particularly useful when working with irregular or oversized pieces.
Forward and Reverse Operation
Electronic forward/reverse control allows the Voyager to rotate the spindle in either direction. This is particularly useful for applications such as tapping, where controlled reverse operation can help remove the tap from the workpiece.
The machine also incorporates a dedicated Tapping Assist function with controlled operation designed specifically for tapping applications.
Electronic Braking and Safety Features
The Voyager incorporates electronic braking to bring the spindle to a stop without relying solely on mechanical braking.
Its electronic system also monitors operating conditions and incorporates features such as overload protection, under-voltage protection, and controller over-temperature protection. Sensors provide feedback for operation, maintenance, and safety functions.
Versatile Workshop Applications
The NOVA Voyager DVR is designed to work with a wide variety of materials and applications, including:
Wood drilling
Metal drilling
Plastic drilling
Glass drilling
Pilot-hole operations
Repetitive production drilling
Tapping
Precision workshop fabrication
General woodworking and metalworking
Its combination of low-speed torque, high-speed capability, large swing, and digital control makes it suitable for both general workshop work and more demanding precision applications.

Why Choose the NOVA Voyager DVR?
The NOVA Voyager DVR 18 In. Variable Speed Drill Press is designed for users who want more control than a conventional belt-driven drill press can provide.
Its direct-drive DVR motor, electronic variable speed, intelligent control system, digital displays, 6-inch spindle travel, large tilting table, forward/reverse capability, and tapping assistance make it a versatile machine for demanding workshop environments.
Most importantly, the operator does not have to stop and reposition belts to change spindle speed. Speed can be adjusted electronically, while the direct-drive design eliminates belt vibration and reduces routine mechanical maintenance.
For workshops handling a mix of wood, metal, plastics, glass, drilling, and tapping, the Voyager provides a combination of capacity and electronic control that makes it substantially more versatile than a basic floor-standing drill press.
Important: The NOVA Voyager DVR has been sold in different electrical configurations and has received specification updates over its production life. Always verify the voltage, motor rating, dimensions, and included accessories for the specific regional SKU before purchase or installation.
